Rotterdam police commissioner Jan Hoogstraten was arrested on New Year’s Eve for drink driving. His blood alcohol level was four times higher than the legal limit.
Mr Hoogstraten’s wife fell and was injured when they were taking a walk. The commissioner went to fetch his car because he felt it was taking to long for help to arrive. When he returned to the scene of the accident police officers thought they smelled alcohol on his breath and administered a breathalyzer test.
The case has been referred to a magistrate while the Rotterdam police have launched an internal disciplinary investigation.
