Dutch PM pleased with ‘clear’ UN resolution

Published on 18 March 2011 - 10:38am
More about:

Prime Minister Mark Rutte says he is pleased with the “clear decision” of the UN Security Council on a resolution authorising military intervention in Libya. The resolution was adopted with ten votes in favour and five abstentions (Russia, China, Brazil, Germany and India).

Early on Friday morning, his spokesperson quoted Mr Rutte as saying: "This resolution goes beyond imposing a no-fly zone. It allows for strong measures to protect Libyan civilians. It is clear that the international community no longer accepts Muammar Gaddafi’s actions against his own people.”

Green Left MP Arjan El Fassed said he supports the decision to take responsibility for the protection of Libyan civilians. “It’s important for the resolution to be carried out promptly and effectively."

His Christian Democratic colleague Henk Jan Ormel said he did not expect the Netherlands would be called upon to take part in attacks against Libya.
