Dutch PM hands out Four Freedoms Awards

Published on 12 May 2012 - 4:04pm
More about:

Prime Minister Mark Rutte has handed out the Four Freedoms Awards in the southwestern town of Middelburg.

The main award went to Brazil’s former president Lula da Silva for his fight against poverty. Mr Da Silva, who is ill, had an associate pick up the prize for him.

The award is named after the four freedoms that US President Franklin Roosevelt identified in 1941: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

Other awards were given to news television station Al Jazeera and the Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Hussain Al-Shahristani. A number of Kurds staged a demonstration against the latter prize.
