Dutch players make 2nd round at Roland Garros

Dutch tennis players Arantxa Rus and Robin Haase are through to the second round of the French Roland Garros open championships.

Rus beat fellow US player Jamie Hampton 6-4 4-3 and Haase beat Croat Ivan Dodig 6-2 6-2 6-1. Rus would have faced Serena Williams in the next round, but the US star was knocked out by Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano in a three-hour match. 29-year-old Razzano, ranked 111th, was exhausted after her triumph against Williams. Rus is ranked 23rd in the world.

Haase didn’t have to work that hard to knock Dodig out of the competition. The Croat was ranked 32nd just last year, but has dropped several dozen places.

In the second round, Haase will play Russian Michael Juzni who beat US player James Blake in three sets.
