National Ombudsman Alex Brenninkmeijer is unhappy about the DigiD system and the way in which the government communicates about it. In an interview published in Dutch daily AD he says "If the government was a bank, it would be bankrupt."
The ombudsman was referring to a number of cases of fraud involving DigiD, the digital login code for government websites, revealed last week as well as reports that the system has been hacked.
The interior ministry has denied these reports and says only a few dozen cases of suspected fraud were known.
