Dutch MPs slam draft internet law

Published on 30 July 2010 - 11:24am
More about:

A majority of Dutch MPs are opposed to draft legislation giving the Public Prosecutor’s Office the power to close down websites. De Telegraaf newspaper says MPs think the proposal from outgoing Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin goes too far.

He wants crown prosecutors to be able to close down sites immediately if they contain illegal or illicitly obtained information. The minister contends that judges need not be involved in the process.

He says that this is more effective than ordering the information’s removal and then prosecuting if the website does not comply. However, MPs disagree, arguing that only a judge or magistrate should be allowed to close a site down.
