Insurance companies are reporting a surge in the numbers of claims being made after high winds hit the Netherlands today. Most of the damage wasn’t major and resulted from falling branches and the like.

The provinces of North Holland and Friesland faced the brunt of the bad weather. This morning, the KNMI national weather service issued an orange alert for the two provinces, warning of winds of between 100 and 120 kilometres per hour. The wind has since subsided.

Train networks in a few parts of the Netherlands were disrupted by fallen trees or cables. Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport didn’t experience major problems but there were cancellations of flights to and from Great Britain which was badly hit by the weather.
