Dutch immigration plan worries Brussels

Published on 24 May 2011 - 4:38pm
More about:

EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström says she is concerned about Dutch plans to tighten EU rules on asylum requests and migration.

She told Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad on Tuesday that the European Commission has begun a dialogue with the right-wing government. Ms Malmström, who was on a visit to the Netherlands, is convinced that existing regulations "offer some scope" to improve the handling of social problems relating to integration.

The Dutch government wants to limit immigration aimed at family reunification, where immigrants are joined by family members who had stayed behind in the home country. The proposed changes, inspired by the anti-Islam, pro-government Freedom Party, require changes in EU rules.

Commissioner Malmström points out that the Netherlands is the only country which is insisting on such changes. "I'm aware it is a major issue in the Netherlands. That's not what I hear in other member states."

Finally !You begin to think clearly -because it is co$ting you dearly . Here is what was once required for my father( before the early 50's ) to come to Amerika. First--you needed to apply & pay fees ,or get a sponsor to pay the $300.00 fee,who agreed also to cover all costs you might need (food, shelter, medical ,enz.)You had to agree to find employment immediately and pay for all your needs & expenses. There was no Government subsidized housing & free health-care in those days...you paid for your own children's lunches at school. You did not get anything for FREE from the government( meaning the Taxpayers here). You did not buy a car, or a house or go on vacation unless you could afford to do so. You did not demand that everything be put into your native language- at work, or at school (if it was not English) for that would've been considered bad manners, lazy & rude since you are were lucky to get here and most immigrants then were grateful for the opportunity. You took the driver's license test & the citizenship test in ENGLISH !!! You & your children were speaking English in about one year . If you wanted lessons...you paid for them. You were proud of your heritage & the Old country , but even prouder to become an American. If you did not like it here...you could leave. You did not whine & complain & act like you were entitled to handouts. Those were the days of good citizens.People worked hard, they saved their money & then they went shopping for what they wanted or needed .They were careful when they took out loans. They did not have a " Victim Mentality " even if they had endured sufferings as victims (as so many truly had). That kind of person had character...it helped make this country great. But that was then ...and now...it is a pity what has happened to this great country. We have too many lazy bums who come here as leeches, feeling "entitled".They think they "know their rights"...but they don't know "nothing" & they have been bleeding this country dry.I hope we get back to those old requirements again & make it a privilege to come here. Not a right .

I doubt the EU is particularly worried about NL's plans. They shouldn't be. The writing is on the wall for this current government. They've failed to gain a majority in the upper house. Wilders has been burning his bridges with PM Rutte over Greece. It's unlikely any coalition in the near future will choose to involve the PVV. With these guys pushed to the margins, political debate could actually return to matters which are important to Dutch people, like (gasp!) the economy.
