The Netherlands has extradited a Somali-born suspected terrorist to the United States. Mahamud Omar was arrested last year in a Dutch asylum seekers centre. He has since been held in the terrorist wing of the high-security prison in Vught.
Former Minneapolis resident Omar has been accused by the US of recruiting terrorists for the Somali al-Shabaab movement, which is assumed to be connected to al-Qaeda.
The 45-year-old Somali acquired US citizenship in 1994. He moved to the Netherlands in 2008, where he was arrested after being charged by a US court.
