Dutch government U-turn on child benefit

Published on 19 September 2011 - 6:51pm
More about:

The cabinet has announced plans to introduce measures to help families with three children or more. Child-related benefit was restricted to two children in the annual budget presented last week.

Insiders have confirmed reports by public broadcaster NOS that the government has changed its mind.

The cuts to the child-related benefit were criticised by the SGP, a small fundamentalist Christian party. The minority coalition government needs the support of the SGP for a majority in the upper house, the Senate.
