Published on 29 February 2012 - 11:45am
More about:

A Dutch freighter was attacked off the Nigerian coast on Tuesday afternoon. The captain and a technician have been taken hostage. Their nationalities are unknown.

The International Maritime Bureau reports that one crew member was injured in the attack. The ship is owned by a Dutch shipping company and is sailing under the flag of Curaçao.

About eight pirates boarded the ship, robbed the 14 crew members and took two of them hostage. It is not known whether a demand for ransom has been made.

The International Maritime Bureau says that piracy in Nigerian waters is on the rise.
