Dutch FM helps block anti-gay Uganda law

Published on 15 May 2011 - 12:11pm
More about:

Over the past days the Dutch government has joined many other countries in conveying their concerns to Uganda over a draft bill that could see homosexuals being sentenced to death.

Uganda’s parliament was to vote on the bill on Wednesday but this has now been postponed.

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal does not expect the bill to be put forward in parliament any time soon again.

Incumbent  President Yoweri Museveni was installed on Thursday and the new parliament will be sworn in this week.

“All pending draft bills have accordingly been dropped”,  Mr Rosenthal informed the Dutch parliament in response to questions raised by Alexander Pechtold, the leader of the democrat party D66.

Mr Pechtold had urged the foreign minister to take international action to block the Ugandan bill.
