Johnny Hoogerland has auctioned off one of the bikes he used during the Tour de France. He is donating the 5,600 euros it fetched to the Dutch branch of Médecins Sans Frontières.
Hoogerland became a hero for many Dutch when he crashed at high speed into a barbed wire fence during the Tour after a car hit a group of cyclists in the race. Despite his injuries which required 33 stitches, he carried on to finish the Tour. He also won the polka dot jersey – for the best climber – during a number of the Tour’s stages.
