A Dutch couple vacationing in Brazil have been arrested after leaving their young children behind on their yacht.

Brazilian media report that the family was on a trip around the world and had dropped anchor in a Rio de Janeiro marina.

The parents had gone to visit friends on a boat a few hundred yards away from their own. Local fishermen sounded the alarm when they hear a child crying aboard the yacht but did not see anyone about. Aid workers who boarded the vessel discovered found two children aged four and two and a seven-month-old baby.

In Brazil it’s illegal for parents to leave their children without supervision. The parents have since been released on bail but were told they must stay in Rio de Janeiro.
