The main award of the Dutch Prince Claus Fund this year will go to Chimurenga (Struggle for Freedom), a Pan-African publication on culture, art and politics.

Its founder, the writer and DJ Ntone Edjabe, grew up in Cameroon, studied in Nigeria and is now based in South Africa. He will receive the 100,000-euro prize during a ceremony at Amsterdam’s Royal Palace on 14 December.

Chimurenga is published each month online and is distributed two to three times a year both in Africa and elsewhere. The Chimurenga Library, a unique collection of independent African cultural magazines, is available online and also in the form of a travelling exhibition.

Ten other laureates will be presented with their awards of 25,000 euros by the Dutch ambassadors in the countries where they reside. The laureates are selected by an independent, international committee.

The annual prize, named after Queen Beatrix’s late husband, has been awarded since 1997. It honours cultural pioneers whose work is located on the frontline of free cultural expression in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
