Dutch and Tanzanian killed in safari park

A Dutch tourist and a Tanzanian national were killed in a raid on a holiday camp in the village of Rubanda in Tanzania on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the Tanzanian Tourism Minister, Khamisi Kagasheki, forty visitors staying at the Moivaro holiday camp were robbed of their possessions by bandits. According to some reports the robbers were armed. The Dutch tourist was named as Eric Brekelmans, and the Tanzanian was Renatus Benard, who was Assistant Manager of the Moivaro camp on the outskirts of Serengeti Safari Park. According to Dutch public broadcaster NOS, Mr Brekelmans was shot in the back and died before reaching hospital. He was on holiday with his wife.

The Tanzanian authorities have begun a search for the bandits, who disappeared without trace. Spokespeople for the tourism industry say that such violent incidents are extremely rare in Tanzania.
