After their victory in the 1A class of the Formula Student race on the Silverstone track in England, the Dutch students from the University of Delft and their electric racing car are taking part in the next Formula Student event in Hockenheim in Germany.
Formula Student is intended as a testing ground for next generation of engineers. University students from around the globe were challenged to design and build a single-seat racing car, which was then put to the test in a race at the famous Silverstone circuit.
The 1A class was introduced for vehicles which are designed to give optimum fuel efficiency through all sorts of new technologies like electric propulsion, hybrids and alternative fuels.
The Delft students won last year’s 1A class race in Hockenheim and are hoping their self-built electric car will take them to victory in Germany again.
At 178 kilograms, the Delft racing car is the lightest of its kind. The other cars in the 1A class weigh in at around 200 kg and over.
The Formula Student cars are judged on a number of aspects, including design and quality of construction.
