Curaçao angry at Dutch corruption inquiry

Published on 13 June 2011 - 9:15pm
More about:

The government of Curaçao is furious that Kingdom Relations Minister Piet Hein Donner is refusing to call off an investigation into corruption on the southern Caribbean island. Curaçao is a constituent country of the Netherlands.

Gerrit Schotte, the country’s prime minister, and the president of its central bank, Emsley Tromp, have for months been accusing each other of corruption. The island had asked the Dutch State Ministerial Council to organise an investigation to sort the matter out, but later withdrew the request.

Despite this, Mr Donner has decided to go ahead with the inquiry. He says confidence in the island’s administration should be re-established as soon as possible.
