Corruption watchdog breaks with FIFA

Published on 2 December 2011 - 4:21pm
More about:

A corruption watchdog commissioned to advise FIFA on stamping out graft has cut its ties with international football’s governing body. Transparency International (TI) said the football association ignored its key recommendations.

FIFA, in turn, has hired in an external expert to monitor the ‘reform process’, following a series of bribery and corruption scandals. But TI says the expert’s objectivity is questionable, given that he’s on FIFA’s pay roll.

Consultant Mark Piet said it was common practice in companies to be hired in and still take an independent stance in giving advice. FIFA has refused to comment on the issue.
