Supermarkets will again see a minor increase in turnover this year while the rest of the retail sector faces shrinkage.
In a report published on Monday, economists from ABN Amro bank write that supermarkets are less sensitive to the difficult economic climate than other retailers.
Consumers are expected to eat out less and shop at the supermarket instead. As a result, ABN Amro predicts that supermarkets will realise one percent more turnover on average compared to 2011.
Increasing unemployment and the accompanying reduction in spending power are expected to deny other retailers any prospect of growth.
Retailers in the electronics, clothing and home improvement sectors are predicted to see turnover decrease by1.5 to 2.5 percent this year.
