Churches increasingly asked for financial help

Dutch Protestant churches have seen the number of requests for financial assistance more than double in just two years. The data feature in the report Armoede in Nederland 2010 (Poverty in the Netherlands in 2010) published by Kerk in Actie (Church in Action) on Wednesday.

Fifteen religious denominations took part in the survey, which included more than 4,000 church social welfare groups, parish charity institutions and other church organisations. Other social instituitions, such as food banks and emergency funds were also interviewed.

The Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (Protest Church in the Netherlands) has seen the number of requests for financial assistance more than double from 7,300 in 2007 to nearly 16.000 in 2009.
