Chinese president sightseeing in Austria ahead of G20

Published on 1 November 2011 - 6:12pm
More about:

China's President Hu Jintao spent the second day of his two-day state visit to Austria Tuesday as a tourist, before he heads to a G20 meeting in France later this week.

After political talks in Vienna on Monday, Hu visited the scenic Salzkammergut region and took a boat cruise on the Wolfgangsee lake with his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer and local dignitaries.

Later Tuesday, he was to visit the former home of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and attend a classical concert there before an evening banquet.

No political talks were planned on Tuesday, as Hu prepares to attend a meeting of the world's 20 biggest economies in the French resort of Cannes on Thursday and Friday, with Europe's economic woes at the top of the agenda.

On Monday, the Chinese president told journalists he was "convinced" Europe could sort out its debt troubles.

European leaders have appealed to Beijing for help but China has so far remained non-committal, even if Trade Minister Chen Deming pledged "active support" to the region in Vienna.

On Tuesday, the Tibetan community staged renewed protests in Salzburg against China's human rights violations. More demonstrations were expected in the afternoon by the Falun Gong movement but so far all protests have been peaceful.

Hu's visit to Austria was to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations between Beijing and Vienna.
