Child sex abuse case leads to other investigations

Published on 30 May 2012 - 10:05am
More about:

The Amsterdam child sex abuse case has led to 440 investigations around the world, according to a report from the Dutch public broadcaster NOS.

On Wednesday, the Dutch authorities will hold a press conference and give more details about the other investigations, which were started as a result of information found on computers belonging to the main suspect in the case, Robert Mikelsons.

In December 2010, Mikelsons was arrested for sexually abusing dozens of very young children at a creche in Amsterdam. The abuse came to light because of an investigation in the United States. US authorities found a photograph of a two-year-old boy from the Netherlands. That photo was shown on a Dutch crime investigation TV programme. The child was recognised by a viewer and Mikelsons was arrested that evening.

Last week, Robert Mikelsons was sentenced to 18 years in prison plus indefinite psychiatric confinement, after being convicted of sexually abusing 67 very young children.
