Charges to be reintroduced for ID cards

Published on 28 September 2011 - 10:52pm
More about:

MPs have voted in favour of reintroducing charges for ID cards from Thursday next week.

The motion was passed after extra legal advice at the request of the MPs. The fee will also apply to people who have already applied for ID cards.

There had been a rush on the cards after the Supreme Court ruled at the beginning of September that the cards should be free-of-charge because they are legally obligatory from the age of 14.

Earlier today, the Upper House refused to rush the legislation through. It appears the minister has managed to circumvent the Senators, who want to pay more attention to the matter before voting on it.
