Call for proactive monitoring of Dutch prisoners abroad

Published on 16 February 2011 - 3:11pm
More about:

Parliament wants better monitoring of Dutch people being held in foreign jails. The Democrat D66 party, which called for the debate, says around 2,000 Dutch citizens are currently imprisoned abroad.

Party leader Alexander Pechtold said it was important for the Dutch government to take a proactive stance since we need as complete as possible a picture of their situation in order to help them.

In the wake of the execution of the Dutch-Iranian woman Zahra Bahrami, D66 is working on a bill which would offer assistance to every Dutch person at risk of the death penalty.
