Early this morning, Belgian motorists faced miles of gridlock on many of the country’s motorways as a result of a railway strike. The total length of traffic jams had increased to 350 kilometres by around 8.30 in the morning. Most of the tailbacks had dissolved by 11 o’clock.
The strike started on Sunday evening at 10 a.m. and will end on Monday evening at the same time. The strike was called by Socialist trade union ACOD in protest against reforms in rail freight transport which ACOD claims will cost hundreds of train drivers’ jobs.
As a result of the strike, there will be no rail traffic between the Netherlands and Belgium. The Thalys high-speed trains between Amsterdam and Paris are not running either.
