Belgian PM makes first address in Dutch

Published on 7 December 2011 - 5:27pm
More about:

Belgian’s new Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo made his first public statement Wednesday in the Dutch language. Promising a better future for Belgian citizens, he encouraged hope and confidence during the economic crisis.

Mr Di Rupo is the first francophone prime minister of the majority Dutch-speaking country since the late 70s. Alternating between the two languages, he asked for patience and understanding as he promised to improve his Dutch.

The newly elected prime minister was sworn in after a record 541 days of political deadlock in the country. In his message, he stressed the need for substantial reform to cope with Belgium’s high level of debt and increasing life expectancy.

Belgium must save 11 billion euros over the next year through budget cuts and tax increases.
