Dirk Scheringa, former head of the DSB bank which collapsed last year, has filed charges against the management of the Netherlands Bank (DNB). Self-made man Scheringa says DNB-president Nout Wellink and three other bank executives are responsible for leaking confidential information.
In October last year, the news leaked that DSB had requested emergency funding to keep the bank solvent. The news was the final nail in the coffin of the bank as it caused a final and fatal run on the bank. Mr Scheringa says this is the main cause of the bank's bankruptcy.
The bank had been in difficulties after a prominent advisor told account holders on public television to remove their savings from the DSB, causing the first run on the bank. The advisor, Pieter Lakeman, who represented customers duped by the bank into taking out extortionate insurance policies, said he would rather deal with the receivers.
An investigation into the leak last year failed to uncover the truth of the affair and no further action was taken. The fall of the DSB bank spelt the end of Dirk Scheringa's emporium. Besides running a bank, he owned AZ football club and an art museum.
