Ban on public gatherings in Museumplein

Published on 26 October 2011 - 6:02pm
More about:

Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan has imposed a ban on public gatherings for the Museumplein area on Wednesday between 1400 and midnight to prevent clashes between Turkish and Kurdish protesters.

Turkish groups have posted calls on the internet for renewed demonstrations against the Kurdish separatist movement PKK. On Sunday a group of Turkish demonstrators attacked a Kurdish community centre in the Museumplein area.

The clashes were prompted by PKK attacks in southeast Turkey on 19 October in which 24 soldiers were killed.
In a joint statement published earlier today, the Amsterdam council and Turkish and Kurdish organisation urged people not to go to Museumplein to avoid a repetition of Sunday’s clashes.

In the statement the signatories say they regret what happened, particularly in the light of the earthquake disaster that hit eastern Turkey that same day.
