Australia’s defence chief, Air Chief Marshall Allan Grant “Angus” Houston has been granted an honorary award by the Netherlands. Marshall Houston was made a member of the Order of Orange-Nassau for his contribution to the joint Dutch-Australian military effort in Afghanistan.
General Peter van Uhm, head of the Netherlands armed forces, bestowed the distinction on his counterpart during a visit to Australia. General van Uhm said that Houston had shown incredible dedication during the joint mission in the Uruzgan province.
He had encouraged “mutual understanding, respect and trust between the Dutch and Australian units in Uruzgan,” General van Uhm added.
The Dutch defence ministry said that Marshall Houston had secured 25 armoured vehicles from his own supplies for the Dutch forces, affording extra security against roadside bombs.
