A federal prosecutor Monday asked a judge to investigate Vice President Amado Boudou for alleged illicit enrichment, in a case that could shake President Cristina Kirchner's government.

Prosecutor Jorge Di Lello asked federal magistrate Ariel Lijo to probe Boudou for alleged corruption while he headed the Economy Ministry in Kirchner's first term, which ran from 2007-2011. Lijo now must decide if he accepts the prosecutor's request.

Boudou, 48, already has been linked to separate alleged influence peddling in a case favoring the company of a personal friend which prints government bills and documents.

Opposition lawmaker Margarita Stolbizer called on Boudou to "step down from the government."
