The Dutch meteorological office (KNMI) has issued a weather warning for the northern and eastern provinces of Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland.
A spokesperson for the KNMI says the orange alert has been issued because severe thunder storms, heavy showers and strong winds are expected.
Humid conditions in the north are making the bad weather crossing the country at the moment more active. As a result, winds could gust up to 120 km per hour. There may also be local flooding as a result of the heavy rain. The bad weather is expected to last until evening.
Earlier today, a heavy shower and thunder storm slowed traffic down around Rotterdam and The Hague. Radio stations could not be received in some parts of the country for a while.
Lightning put train services out of action in the eastern towns of ‘t Harde and Putten and a train hit a tree which had fallen on the rails near Winterswijk.
It is the sixth weather warning issued this summer, five of them in the past week. Experts say this is exceptional, and hardly ever seen even in winter, let alone summer.
