Anne Frank gets monument in Israel

Published on 12 April 2011 - 7:44pm
More about:

Israel’s National Jewish Fund is setting up a monument to Anne Frank, whose famous diary covers her life in a house in Amsterdam where she hid from the Nazis during the Second World War.

The monument is by Dutch designer Piet Cohen who is Jewish and also went into hiding during the war. It will be unveiled in Jerusalem’s Anne Frank Memorial Park on 2 May.

It outlines a massive cube in rusty steel - one wall is solid and has the image of a chestnut tree cut into it. From her hiding place in the Amsterdam house, Anne Frank was able to see a chestnut tree in the garden. The monument symbolises freedom and confinement.
