Angel with cell phone adorns cathedral

Published on 3 April 2011 - 2:08pm
More about:

A statue of an angel holding a mobile phone has been unveiled at St John’s Cathedral in the southern Dutch city of 's-Hertogenbosch. It marks the completion of a twelve-year restoration costing more than 48 million euros, NOS reports.

The angel joins the many other statues adorning the outside of the mediaeval cathedral. It is is the brainchild of sculptor Ton Mooy, who has created a total of 25 new angels statues for the cathedral. The last in the series needed a modern twist, he decided. As well as holding a mobile phone, the carved stone angel is also wearing jeans.

The phone has just one button, the artist says – it directly dials God.

The cell phone angel isn’t the only decorative element in the cathedral with a contemporary addition. A stained glass window depicting a scene from hell includes an image of the September 11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York.
