Amsterdam’s AEX index was up 1.3 on Thursday morning, 45 minutes after opening. Stock markets in London, Paris and Frankfurt were also up by between 1.8 and 2.1 percent.
Financial stocks - which took a battering on Wednesday following rumours that France’s creditworthiness was to be downgraded - bounced back somewhat. They included French bank Société Générale which rose 7 percent after having lost 20 percent on Wednesday.
The markets remain extremely volatile, and the opening gains gradually lessened somewhat. On Wednesday, stocks on the European markets rose at first, only to close deep in the red.
