Amsterdam shuts down most of Occupy camp

Published on 8 December 2011 - 8:59pm
More about:

Amsterdam police say they arrested 14 protestors during an operation to remove some of the tents belonging to the Occupy Beursplein movement.

On Tuesday, the Amsterdam authorities told the Occupy activists that they had until Thursday morning to give 75 percent of the Beursplein back to ‘ordinary Amsterdammers’ and improve the fire safety, sanitary and hygiene measures throughout the rest of the protest camp.

Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan also ruled that just four activists would be allowed to spend the night at the protest camp.

Police say they made the arrests after protestors refused to follow instructions issued by the police.
Occupy Beursplein is part of the worldwide protest movement against rapacious capitalism and the global debt crisis, which they blame on greedy bankers.
