Amsterdam overflowing with Orange fans

Published on 11 July 2010 - 6:27pm
More about:

The authorities in Amsterdam have called on football supporters to stop coming to the capital. Amsterdam has been flooded with fans planning to watch the World Cup final between the Netherlands and Spain at the city's Museum Square or other locations where the match will be shown on big screens.

Museum Square had already reached its maximum capacity of 100,000 people more than three hours before kick-off, according to a city council spokesman.

Other squares in the other city are also so packed that the council is advising fans to stay at home to watch, “due to safety considerations, but also because it simply won't be possible to see the match through the crowd.”

Amsterdam city council says the city is still safe, but if the crowds build up any more, they will be forced to close off Museum Square. But a national railway spokesperson said trains heading for the capital are packed with thousands more people.
