Amsterdam plans to experiment with different rules for outlets selling cannabis in an attempt to reduce the public nuisance arising from the trade. Critics complain that drug users tend to hang about outside regular “coffeeshops”.
The trial involves two new types of coffeeshop: in one, the grass or hashish must be consumed on the premises; in the other, a takeaway counter open during regular shop hours, cannabis can be bought but not used.
The experiment in Amsterdam is to start next year at the earliest. The problems surrounding coffeeshops will first be documented in detail.
