The Dutch fashion world is converging on the capital for the launch of Amsterdam Fashion Week on Wednesday. Designer Sjaak Hullekes will be opening the 16th edition of the fashion week with a catwalk show.
The bi-annual event has undergone a name change. It used to be known as Amsterdam International Fashion Week, but now the ‘international’ has been dropped.
It’s not that the organisers have given up trying to be international – quite the opposite in fact, says fashion week chief Bart Maussen. They don’t want to seem like they’re trying too hard. “We’re international anyway, and the fashion weeks in New York and London don’t call themselves that.”
None the less, the programme is dominated by home-grown designers. A show by the extravagant Dutch designer Bas Kosters will round off the opening night. Thursday will showcase new talent and Friday will focus on sustainability. Bigger names and newcomers will show their collections at the weekend.
Amsterdam Fashion Week launched in 2004 hoping “to put Amsterdam on the map as a sparkling and internationally oriented destination for fashion”, following the models of London and New York.
