Amsterdam on Sunday commemorated the liberation of the Auschwitz destruction camp on 27 January 1945.
The ceremony was attended by next of kin, dignitaries and members of the general public who commemorated the millions of Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, members of the resistance and political dissidents who were killed by the Nazi regime during World War II.
A silent march took the participants from city hall to the monument 'Nooit Meer Auschwitz' (Never again Auschwitz) created by the late author and visual artist Jan Wolkers in the Wertheimpark, where wreaths were laid. Among the speakers at the monument was Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan.
