The American, a new film by Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn, is a big hit in the United States. Several US websites report that the thriller was the most seen movie in US cinemas at the weekend.

Anton Corbijn's second film is about a hit man, played by George Clooney, whose boss forces him to hide in an Italian mountain village after botching a job. While in the village, he is given one last assignment. Dutch actress Thekla Reuten has an important supporting role.

In the Netherlands, The American will premiere at the Film by the Sea festival in Vlissingen on Friday. Dutch cinemas will begin showing the feature film on 16 September.
