Ajax close to title, Feyenoord second

Published on 29 April 2012 - 5:41pm
More about:

Premier League leaders Ajax have defeated FC Twente 2-1 but failed to clinch the championship title, as Feyenoord, who beat AZ 1-0, are trailing by a mere six points, with two more rounds to go.

Ajax have the best goal tally. Ajax took the lead in the first half with a penalty converted by Theo Janssen. The equaliser by Leroy Fer came after half-time. The winning goal was scored by Gregory van der Wiel. Ajax now only need to get one point out of Wednesday’s home fixture against VVV-Venlo to secure the title.

PSV beat Roda JC 3-1, securing their first away win this year. The victory means they’ve shot up from sixth to third spot, with 63 points out of 32 matches. Goals by Dries Mertens en Marcelo put PSV in the lead before half-time, with Sanharib Malki scoring for Roda. In the final phase, the visitors were one man down after goalkeeper Pawel Kieszek was shown red. Jeremain Lens subsequently failed to convert a penalty. Memphis Depay netted PSV's third goal.

In a spell-binding duel for second place, Feyenoord beat AZ 1-0 in their own Kuip stadium, which was filled to capacity. Otman Bakkal scored the critical goal ten minutes into the second half. Feyenoord are now alone in second spot, three points clear of AZ, who are in fourth spot.
