Over 15 million euros have been wasted on plans for the National Historical Museum of the Netherlands, says NOS Dutch public service broadcaster. The museum never got off the ground.
The culture ministry, responsible for museum subsidies, has spent the lion’s share of the money, but various local councils and other organisations have also lost cash in the affair. The NOS tally for the final bill comes to 15,298,477 euros.
The cash flow started in 2007, with Amsterdam, The Hague and Arnhem competing to house the proposed museum. In the end, Arnhem won the fight to provide a suitable venue.
The National Historical Museum foundation was officially launched in September 2008. From then on, it received annual subsidies from the culture ministry. The subsidy for 2010 was over six million euros. The foundation is due to be wound up at the end of this year.
