Two teenage Afghan sisters facing deportation will be allowed to remain in the Netherlands. The girls, who live in the eastern city of Hengelo with their family, were supported by their school in a fierce residency battle with the government.
The Bataafs Lyceum congratulated Karima and Krishma Khorshidi on their website. “This means that Karima will be able to move on to third-level education and Krishma can finish secondary school,” read the message. The schoolgirls, aged 18 and 15, have been living in the Netherlands for nine years.
In April, Green Left appealed to Immigration and Asylum Minister Gerd Leers to stop the deportation of “westernised” Afghan girls, sparking off an intensive public debate on the issue.
