Zimbabweans face human rights violations

Published on 18 June 2009 - 3:30pm
More about:

Amnesty International's Secretary General Irene Khan says that Zimbabweans face "continual and serious" violations of their human rights.

The new unified government has brought little improvement to the situation. Ms Khan says most people in Zimbabwe live in poverty, and that there is little hope for a better future.

Amnesty International has recently conducted a study of the country, which was thrown into economic crisis under Robert Mugabe's presidency. Officially, Mr Mugabe's party, Zanu-PF, is cooperating with the MDC, the party of his political rival Morgan Tsvangirai. In practice, however, the two parties are mainly adversaries.
