The Mexican and Honduran authorities have announced that ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya will not travel to Mexico for the time being.
During a meeting with the Honduran interim government on Wednesday, Mr Zelaya reportedly agreed to travel to Mexico and apply for political asylum there. However, he has now decided he will not travel to Mexico as an asylum seeker because this would limit his ability to conduct political activities from abroad.
Manuel Zelaya was deposed by the army in June and put on a plane to Costa Rica. Roberto Micheletti was appointed interim president. However, Manuel Zelaya secretly returned to Honduras in September and took refuge in the Brazilian embassy in the capital Tegucigalpa.
Under intense international pressure, the two parties signed an accord which included new presidential elections and a parliamentary vote on a possible reinstatement of Manuel Zelaya. Last week, parliament rejected this option. Conservative politician Porfirio Lobo won the elections and will be inaugurated in late January.
