Yugoslavia Tribunal hears Karadzic charges

Published on 2 November 2009 - 7:50pm
More about:

The charges against former Bosnian-Serb leader Radovan Karadzic have been read out at the Yugoslavia Tribunal in The Hague. Mr Karadzic is charged, in part, with war crimes and genocide.

The prosecutors say that he personally coordinated the four-year siege of Sarajevo (1992-1996) and gave the order for the murder of around 7000 Muslims in the Srebrenica enclave in 1995.

Mr Karadzic was not in court to hear the reading of the charges. He has also been absent from earlier sessions. However, he is expected to attend on Monday, and to argue once more that he requires more time to prepare to conduct his own defence. It is possible that the court may decide to assign him a lawyer.
