Yemeni rebels agree to cease-fire

Published on 30 January 2010 - 8:29pm
More about:

Shi'ite rebels in northern Yemen have agreed to a cease-fire.

In an audio recording released on the internet the leader of the Houthi rebels, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, says he is prepared to accept the government's conditions. However, Mr al-Houthi said that before a cease-fire could take effect, attacks on the rebels by government troops must cease.

The Yemeni government is demanding that the rebels withdraw from official buildings, reopen roads in the north, hand over weapons and release captured troops and civilians.

The Yemeni army and the Shi'ite rebels have been fighting since 2004. Fighting stopped in August 2009, following a government offensive. Earlier this week, the Saudi Arabian army announced that it had driven Houthi rebels away from its border with Yemen.
