Yellow fever vaccination campaign in West Africa

Published on 23 November 2009 - 3:16pm
More about:

The World Health Organisation has launched a major vaccination campaign against yellow fever in three West African countries.

About 12 million people in Benin, Liberia and Sierra Leone will be vaccinated against the disease, which can be lethal if left untreated.
The symptoms of yellow fever, which is spread by infected mosquitoes, are nausea, haemorrhaging, renal problems and a yellow skin colour. Each year, about 30,000 people die of the disease. The WHO does not expect the vaccination campaign will lead to the total eradication of the disease.
