The new decade is being celebrated all over the word as clocks chime midnight. The 5000 residents of Kiritimati island in the South Pacific were the first, ringing in 2010 thirteen hours ahead of the Netherlands at 11.00 Central European Time.
In Sydney Australia, about one and a half million revellers watched a spectacular firework show on Harbour Bridge. Spirits were dampened slightly by a ban on drinking alcohol in public during the New Year celebrations. In Taiwan's capital Taipei, the fireworks were launched from the more than 500-metres-high 101 Tower.
The United States embassy in Indonesia earlier warned of a possible New Year terrorist attack on Bali, a popular destination with Western tourists, but the threat was called into question by the island's governor.
